  • It's body is a shiny blue-black with white markings on its neck/back and extensive white on the trailing edge of both the upper and under wings
  • The crest of the adult male is black on the front edge and red on the sides/back, while on juveniles and adult females it's just black
  • The adults beak is ivory in colour while the juveniles is a chalky white.

Habitat:

  • Found usually in the southeastern part of the United States
  • Prefer to live in hardwood swamps and pine forests. (with large amounts of decaying and/or dead trees)

Diet:

  • Mainly eats the larvae of wood-boring beetles
  • Also eats other insects, seeds and fruit.

Breeding:

  • Thought to have one partner for life
  • Breed every year between January and May
  • Before the have their young, they will make a nest in a dead or nearly dead tree about 8-15m above the ground
  • They usually lay about 2-5 eggs and incubate them for 3-5 weeks
  • Both parents take turns caring for the chicks, but at night the male has full responsibility
  • The chicks learn to fly about 5 weeks after they are born. Even then the parents still feed them
  • Family eventually splits up in late fall/early winter

  • In the middle of the 20th century this bird was thought to have gone extinct until it was rediscovered in 2005 in the "Big Woods" of eastern Arkansas. Since then it has been proven difficult to relocate.

A large, crow sized woodpecker with a slightly recurved crest, mainly black with white on the trailing wing edges, appearing as a white shield on the lower back when the wings are folded. Males have a red crest, females black. Two white lines running from the back to the bird's neck.
