This image is believed to be the first political cartoon. He selected the cut rattlesnake and its caption from a French source. According to an Italian iconography book, snakes symbolized democracy. Because snakes also had negative meaning, Franklin and other American leaders later pursued other symbols to represent the new nation.

From head to tail, each section of the snake represents a colony. Each colony's position on the snake represents its geographic position. The tail is south; the head is north. The colonies are South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and New England. (New England referred to Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire.) The cartoon accompanied Franklin's article criticizing the "disunited State of the British Colonies."
