It usually means that they can see the top part of the cerebellum (vermis) has shrunk a bit on an MRI scan, but it is not clinically significant unless the patient has symptoms. If the patient were symptomatic (loss of balance, vision problems, swallowing difficulty, tremors, etc.), they would monitor the progression, and do more testing (such as blood work, repeat scan,etc.). There are acquired forms (Alcoholism, stroke, tumors, etc.) and hereditary forms of this condition, and some are of unknown cause.
