The word "Tanakh" is the combination of all the Jewish prophets, including the Torah. The Tanakh is learned 1) because of the mitzva (Divine precept) to learn the prophecies, 2) because it contains Divine exhortations plus words of comfort, 3) because it also has the information about our forebears, and 4) because the Tanakh provides portents and precedents for all generations.

The Tanakh is also known as the Masoretic Text. The name is an acronym formed from the initial Hebrew letters of the Masoretic Text's three traditional subdivisions: The Torah ("Teaching", also known as the Five Books of Moses), Nevi'im ("Prophets") and Ketuvim ("Writings")-hence TaNaKh.

People read the Tanakh (Old Testament) to get a good understanding of the foundation of the belifes and worship of the GOD of the Hebrews.also in order to understand the New Testament and why Jesus came you would need to read the tanakh in particular Isaiah 42, Deuteronomy 18:15 and so on. The Apostle Paul Taught out of the Tanakh because there wasnt a new testament at that time.So he taught people about jesus using the tanakh as stated in the book of acts.

Acts 28:23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

Did Muhammad ever read the Old Testament?

It is generally claimed that he could not read at all. Actually this is probably an exaggeration; there are hadiths from his later life that show him reading at least at a basic level. However, he certainly could not read Hebrew. He probably could not even read well enough to read an Arabic translation of the Tanakh. He certainly spoke an acted like a person who had not a clue what the Tanakh really said, or how the bits of it that other people had told him all fitted together in a coherent whole. ____________________________________________________ Sure, he didn't read the old testament or any other writings because the prophet (peace be upon him) was illiterate. There are many events that prove he was illiterate.

Do Jews use only the Torah or do they read the other books of the Old Testament?

The Torah is primary; and its entire text is read over the course of each year in the synagogue. The rest of the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) is secondary; only some portions are read in the synagogue. However, the entire Tanakh is taught and studied by Jews privately or in groups, along with other subjects such as Jewish laws and Talmud. It is worth noting that while the Old Testament and Tanakh are similar, there are several differences between the two texts including: additional books in the Old Testament, additional chapters in the Old Testament, and changed words/translations.
