The two atomic bombs dropped by the United States on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, caused irradiation and nuclear mutations that make the area still unstable today.

In the more conventional fields of warfare, large swaths of wilderness, farms, and settlement were wrenched apart by bombs, field artillery, and incendiaries (fire-causing napalm bombs). The detonation of depth charges and torpedoes underwater killed fish and disrupted the sensitive underwater ecosystems.

Huge numbers of decaying corpses spread various diseases. The abundance of decaying flesh also caused rat and similar populations to skyrocket.

Finally, the increased demand for war material meant that mining and heavy industry increased dramatically, further destroying the natural environment.
