The draftee in Vietnam, for the most part, didn't want to be in the military, didn't want to be in Vietnam, and certainly didn't want to become permanently disabled or killed. He just did what his country (US Government/US Army) told him he had to do, and he did the best that he could, until his two years in the Army was completed.
The Vietnam War like all wars, brought out Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, effects of injuries and chemicals - Agent Orange is still claiming veteran lives as a side effect of being exposed to it. The psychological issues that have come about due to having rotten food, feces, or rocks thrown at them after they returned to the U.S. is another major contributor to their well-being. Their own country had turned on them. Not all but enough to make an impression on the soldiers. The respect they deserve is just starting to filter down and hopefully now they can feel appreciated.
