Franklin's life experience has nothing to do with "man's later achievements." An individual does not affect a society unless they control great power. Franklin was never in that position and his upbringing was not a good one. His father took him out of school at 7 and put him as an apprentice to a candlemakers. He didn't allow Ben to read books, so he hid them from his father. In his early teens his father took him out of the candlemakers apprenticeship and placed him with his brother as an apprentice in his printing business. When his brother got arrested by the British for sedition Ben kept the business going until he got out of jail. When his brother returned he forced Ben to sign another 7 year contract for apprenticeship. At that time Franklin was 17 which meant he would be 24 when his apprenticeship to his brother was over, so Ben ran away. This made him a fugitive because it was against the law to leave an apprenticeship. Ben left Boston and found himself in Philadelphia where he lived the rest of his life. He couldn't find work so he left for London and had a somewhat successful business experience in London. Later, after the Boston Tea Party, the king will call Ben in front of him and dress him down as an American. When he left London to return home he left as a revolutionary swearing to overthrow the king. Franklin spent the rest of his life supporting the colonists fight against the British king. He was so avid about his support that he had his son arrested because he was a British officer and he supported a privateer ship to stop British ships with American POW's on them to free the men and take British sailors as prisoners. The Irish captain he hired to do this ransomed the British sailors and took booty from the ship. He wasn't suppose to do this, so Franklin quit supporting the ship.
