Tension is accomplished with a belt tensioner, it is probably defective and needs replaced.

The serpentine belt you can look at the diagram in your engine compartment for actual routing. The tensioner mounts to the left side of the engine. You need to unbolt the whole assembly. Actually, the belt can be loosened by tightening the bolt of the tensioner pulley. When fully tightened, the pulley will act as a swivel.
remove the belt. then in center of the tensioner is a bolt that goes into engine. remove this bolt. then tensioner should come off.
This is a serpentine belt that runs all of the pulleys on the front of the engine. There is a separate tensioner pulley and not one for the water pump alone. A bad tensioner will allow the serpentine belt too much slack which will allow the belt to slip and yes, the engine can overheat as a result.

The belt is self adjusted by way of a tensioner.
4.0 Engine belt routing and tensioner release location
The serpentine belt and the tensioner on a 300 SE motor is part of the fan system that controls all of the smaller motors on the front of the engine. The serpentine belt helps turn the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, and the fan. The tensioner is a pulley on this belt that helps to keep the belt tight enough to stay on, but not too tight to hinder operation.
Look in the engine compartment for the "serpentine belt" path & tensioner diagram. Release the belt tension at the tensioner, remove & reverse operation.
The serpentine belt should be self-tightening if the appropriately sized belt is properly installed. If the correct belt fails to acheive the proper tension, then the belt tensioner should be replaced.
