It was called the Peninsular War and was a part of the larger Napoleonic Wars. It was fought by Spain and her allies England and Portugal. The allied army was commanded by an English General, Sir Arthur Wellesley, who later became the 1st Duke of Wellington. Wellington finally ended the Napoleonic Wars by defeating Napoleon at Waterloo.
