Most Haughts in the United States can trace their roots back to ancestors who immigrated from the Alsace-Lorraine region of Germany. Records show an Immigration of Haughts to southern Pennsylvania and Northern Virginia (now West Virginia). They sailed to the American frontier in 1751 from Rotterdam, Holland to Philidelphia on the ship, Patience. Portions of the family followed the American frontier from West Virginia, to Ohio, to Illinois, to Texas, to Arizona. Zan Grey lived with a rancher, Babe Haught in Arizona while hunting, fishing and writing wrote books and short stories in Arizona. "The Secret of Quaking AspCabin and Other Stories" mentions his living with the Haughts at this time. Some sources indicate the original German spelling of the name may have been Haut.
