Answer this question… By refusing to back down to Soviet aggression
The point of the Containment Policy was for the United States during the Cold War to keep Communism from spreading. Also if they failed then the domino effect would occur and eventually, more and more countries would fall to Communism. This is the reason the USA fought in the Vietnam War and the Korean War.
Perhaps one of the most policies of the United States to illustrate containment was the Vietnam War that began if full force by US President Lyndon B. Johnson in the 1960's. The war finally ended with US President Richard M. Nixon in 1972.
There the US perceived an expansion of communism in southeast Asia. Vietnam was once a colonial procession of France. The French left Vietnam as a divided country, North Vietnam, a communist country and South Vietnam, a non communist country. The North much like as in North Korea, wanted to unify Vietnam as a communist country.
As within the US's containment policy guidelines, The US did not wish to conquer North Vietnam, but rather wished to contain the communism there from spreading into South Vietnam. It was a long a bitter struggle and in this case, the policy of containment failed as eventually the North & South Vietnams became one communist country.

Sherman's failure to destroy the Army of Tennessee, as ordered by Grant. In the run-up to the General Election, Lincoln needed some dramatic Northern victories, and 'Atlanta Falls' at least made a heck of a headline. In strict battlefield terms, it did not change anything much. (The Army of Tennessee got out safely). But Sherman was already planning his punitive raids across Georgia, which would help to starve the Confederate armies, shatter Southern morale, and decisively shorten the war.
