In the prelude-months before the formal beginning of the American Civil War, the event that prompted South Carolina to secede from the Union was the election of Abraham Lincoln as the 16th President of the United States. With Lincoln's strong anti-slavery sentiments well-known throughout the nation, South Carolina anticipated further attacks upon its slave-holding way of life; therefore, it chose to secede from the Lincoln-led Union rather than endure these anticipated attacks.

The first round of secession was due to the fact Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States. Seven states formed a coalition soon to be called the Confederate States of America. They were: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. After the new Confederacy fired on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, Lincoln issued a call for the loyal states to provide troops to quell the rebellion and force the rebels back into the fold. This did not set well with the remainder of the Southern states, all from the Upper South. They would not send troops to fight against their neighbors and kinsmen and also chose secession. These states were: Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
