He did not do much fighting. At age 14, he served on a ship, Royal Louis. Soon, the ship was captured by the British and he became a prisoner of war. He was eventually swapped in a POW exchange under the condition that he not fight. He signed on a merchant ship, went to England and worked in a shipyard for more than year and came back to the US after the War ended.

He later became active in the anti-slavery movement.
