Umm, the fact that they kept trying to run away to the North?
Not to mention that in 1861, the American Civil War started as a result of slavery, albeit that slavery was a minor cause to the Civil War. Also, the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 was to abolish all slavery within the United States of America. Since the South did not wish to give up their slaves, they had planned, and soon acted upon, to secede from the Union and form the Confederate States of America where slavery would be kept alive for eternity, or so they thought. Some Confederate citizens eventually tried to spread their slave enforcing will further north which helped spark the Civil War.
