Sons of English aristocracy who couldn't inherit because the eldest son took all under the system of primogeniture emigrated to the New World and desired to maintain their style of life they enjoyed in England. The only way they could do that was to develop a huge plantation using slave labor to plant and harvest cash crops and produce other items for use and sale. That way they could still live like aristocrats by keeping all their profits for their own indulgences.
