As the central city of the Eastern Roman Empire, Constantinople (formerly Byzantium) was set up against cliffs that provided a natural barrier for invading forces. Walls were built - three deep - on the open side toward the sea. Those reinforcements coupled with good irrigation and soil, cleanliness, the ability to trade with a variety of nations allowed Byzantium/Constantinople/Istanbul to be self sufficient for an extended period of time - well over 1000 years in fact.

Constant change in leadership that was undermined and the determination of the Ottoman forces were the primary reasons the city changed hands.

What was it that allowed the Roman empire to survive?

There are many factors that allowed the Roman empire to last as long as it did, and you'll get a different answer or two or three from anyone you ask. I think it was able to endure so long because of its ability to absorb other cultures and Romanize them. This Romanization gave the various peoples in the empire a sense of unity and belonging instead of being subservient to a superpower.

How did Byzantium and Western Europe interact with each other and with the large world of the post classical era?

The Western Europeans and the Byzantium civilizations had a predominantly Christian society so that would bring a lot of interactions between the two. But it would also cause problems between the two due to the fact that both cultures had differing views of the faith. During the crusades western Europeans would travel to the Mediterranean so there was a lot of interaction there. The western Europeans and the Byzantium people were a part of the Eurasian long distance trade routes which would have allowed for active communication and integration between the two groups for trades and business interactions. The groups of the western Europeans and the Byzantium people also were together in wars against the Islamic world.
