A profession tends to be defined as an occupation that has clearly defined educational qualifications and a professional body that is responsible for accreditation. I.E. Accountants have to pass a set of exams and earn their "C.A." Chartered Accountant designation from their professional body. Nurses need licenses. Doctors have specific educational qualifications and licences, etc. etc.
Public relations professionals come from a variety of backgrounds, including PR training programs, or communications degree programs, marketing programs, business or journalism programs, or from other professional backgrounds. Although there are a number of professional associations, including the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), who offer membership and even advanced certification, these designations/memberships are not a requirement for participating or succeeding in PR as a profession.
