Ford - Rebublican - was immediately hit by the OPEC Oil Embargo and unwisely pardoned Nixon to refocus the nation on the crushing economic issue at hand. The economy went bad and there were hard feelings about letting Nixon off, and he was defeated by Jimmy Carter, former Governor of Georgia in the 1976 election.

Carter was religious, but ineffective as President. We had just suffered the resignation of a President, the loss of the Vietnam war, which we should never have been involved in (Kennedy and Johnson), gross inflation because of Vietnam and the worst economic disaster imaginable. (America has a few cultures, but the main one is the "North American Car Culture" wherein we identify ourselves culturally primarily through our automobiles and now we were waiting in lines to buy gas that wasn't there).

Carter wanted to be fair in international relations, but as a result, almost everything he touched went bad. He did sign the Camp David accords, but then there was the Iranian hostage crisis, where hundreds of Americans were held hostage for 400 days.

America was depressed. Not in the least due to Carter's unintended insinuation that America (the US) was not living up to its promise and that it was due to our weakness.

Reagan, former actor, divorced and former Governor of California succeeded Carter.

Reagan was a great communicator and great charismatic, and he took Carter's religious issue and turned it into a mainstream ideal. He won by converting the Conservative Southern Democrats to the Republican party. The hostages in Iran were released while Reagan made his inaugural speech and his Secretary of the Treasury, Don Regan converted US economic policy from fiscal (how much the Government spends) to monetary (how much money and money-like instruments are in circulation). Fiscal policy was like herding cats; Congress had to concur, and these two items, more than anything else, made the changes that answer your question:

Reagan was a great President. So was Clinton, Nixon and the our current President for sheparding us through the tech burst and the aftermath of 9/11. (President Bush is to blame for the mess in Iraq, but I think that history will show that no one else could have done better with Katrina; 90 thousand square miles of populated area was destroyed).

Of all Presidents since Kennedy, I think Reagan inherited the worst mess and gave his successor the best situation. Before Reagan, I voted for whoever had the best experience solving problems so that the future would be taken care of. I grew up watching America squander the great power we had inherited from World War two, and I wanted future thinking leaders.

After Reagan, I vote for charismatic leaders who have a history of hiring good advisers and listening to them. Its because I believe that the ability to convince and inspire confidence leads to the stability that allows long-term improvements.
