The development of Renaissance ideas and artistic achievements was critically supported by patrons playing the roles of financier, encourager, inspirational guide, and many others. In the Southern European Renaissance, for example, both the Church and leading aristocratic families played such decisive roles in identifying, supporting, and otherwise enabling important Renaissance figures to achieve in such ways as they did.
The Medici returned to power in Florence after their first exile through a combination of political maneuvering and military support. They secured alliances with other powerful families and gained the support of the people, while also having the backing of foreign powers. With these alliances and their military force, the Medici were able to overthrow their rivals and regain control of Florence.
Immediately after the fall of the Roman Empire, Florence was conquered by the Ostrogoths. The area was disputed between the Ostrogoths and the Byzantine Empire for a while, but was then conquered by Lombards, in 568. It was ruled by a series of Lombard kings, until it was the conquered by Charlemagne in 774. It was part of the Carolingian Empire, and then part of the Holy Roman Empire. The government of Florence became republican in 1115. This government was dominated by guild members. Later in the Middle Ages, mercantile families, including the Albizzi and Medici families, asserted political control of Florence to a great degree.
First of all, several of the philosophers and scientists who revived the interest in Greco-Roman knowledge and culture happened to live in and around Florence. And secondly, because the important families of Florence competed in supporting Renaissance artists and scientists, which in turn attracted many of them to come and work in Florence.

They had family members as popes, financiers, bankers, traders, and had their own army. They were the patrons of the arts and the church. They were a dynasty. They basically built Florence and when you go there today they are the statues in the squares and the palaces you visit.
