Essentially every feature in Glacier National Park was formed by a period of glaciation during the Pleistocene Ice Age, including all the mountains and all the valleys. A look at a map of the park will show several large, long lakes whose beds were scoured out by these glaciers. Some famous and oft-photographed valleys in the park that are easily accessible by car (and on the internet via webcam at www.nps.gov/glac ) are the Lake McDonald Valley, the St. Mary Valley, and the Many Glacier Valley.

The name of a glacier that has frozen to bedrock is rock glacier. A rock glacier is formed by angular blocks of frozen rock that form in the valley of glaciers.

What kind of glacier forms when ice and snow build up in a mountain valley
There are a multitude of valleys in Glacier's mountainous landscape. Some of the most famous along the Going-to-the-Sun Road are the McDonald valley and the St. Mary valley. Other populated parts of the park include the Many Glacier valley and the Two Medicine valley.
The Yosemite Valley is one such valley, but there are many.
A stream shaped valley is usually 'V' shaped. A glacier formed valley is usually 'U' shaped.
A 'V' shaped valley is formed by streams and water action. A 'U' shaped valley is formed by the gouging out of the valley walls by a glacier. A hanging valley is where side valleys are cut across by the main glacier. Hanging valleys often have waterfalls that fall into the main valley over a cliff.
