Scientist have watched closley over the stages of stars, so they believe that the sun was formed from a large collapsing cloud of gas, in some ancient interstellar cloud. It was a polluted cloud.

Once the density reaches a certain point, the likelihood of protons colliding goes way up, enough to start the proton-proton chain reaction that fuses hydrogen into helium. The increasing density (and temperature) from the proto-Sun collapsing on itself reached that point, and the Sun's fusion core ignited.

Just like all of the other stars! It was born in a cluster, medium sized, then a bunch of rocks and gas giants started to orbit it because of the gravity. That's why we see it shining today!
