During the decline of the western empire there were Germanic invasions, continued usurpations, and weak leadership. The Western Roman Empire became a puppet of the Eastern Roman Empire. With the fall of the western empire, several kingdoms were set up by the Germanic invaders who took over areas of the western empire: the kingdom of the Vandals in Africa, the kingdom of the Visigoths (Goths of the West) in Spain and Portugal the Frankish kingdom (in most of Gaul and in Belgium, southern Holland, southern Germany and Switzerland), and the Burgundian kingdom in eastern France. The Ostrogoths (Goths of the East) established a kingdom in Italy and much of the former Yugoslavia. The Visigoths took only military control of Italy. They did not interfere with the affairs of Rome and the Latins in Italy, leaving them effectively independent. A war between the Ostrogoths and the empire of the east (the Gothic wars) broke out due to the emperor of the east Justinian I's ambition to recover the lands lost by the empire of the west and make them part of the eastern empire. At the end of this war, which exhausted both parties, the Lombards invaded Italy and established their own kingdom there.

How is a republic different from a empire?

In comparing a republic and an empire, you are trying to compare apples and oranges. An empire is a large holding. A republic is a form of government. The two have only a marginal relationship. An empire can be any large conglomerate, such as an industrial empire, a publishing empire, a financial empire or a political empire. A republic, as said above is a form or type of government. In a republic the people elect their officials to speak for them. A political empire, such as the Roman empire, can be ruled by a republic form of government, and it was for a time, until the principate form of government replaced the republic and ruled the empire. A more recent empire, the British empire, was ruled by a monarchy. A political empire can be ruled by various forms of government, with a republic being one of the types of government.

What is the difference between the Roman republic and the Roman Emperor?

The Roman republic was a form of government and the Roman emperor was a man. If you mean the difference between the Roman republic and the Roman empire, there was no difference except in the form of government. Rome was already an empire under the republican form of government. When a single person took over leadership of that government, it became the principate or what is erroneously called the "empire". In both types of government, vast amounts of territory were ruled by a single authority, the senate under the republic and the "emperor" under the principate. Both the republic and the principate met the criteria for an empire. The Roman republic was a form of government and the Roman emperor was a man. Who established an empire in place of the old roman republic?

First of all, Rome had been an empire since the second Punic war, probably sooner. There is no exact date. Also you cannot compare a republic with an empire as they are two different things. A republic is a form of government and an empire is a large holding of some type. In other words, the Roman empire was ruled by the republican form of government until the fall of the republic and the establishment of the principate, which was engineered by Octavian/Augustus.

Did the Roman republic come before the Roman empire?

The Roman Republic lasted from the time of the kings until the civil wars in the first century BCE. The first Roman ruler that we call an emperor was Gaius Octavius -- or Augustus -- who ruled from 27 BCE to 14 CE. He didn't call himself an emperor, but "princips" or "first citizen." Rome did not go from a republic to an empire. They are two different things. The republic was/is a form of government while an empire is a political holding. Rome was an empire under the republican form of government. What is generally referred to as the "empire" is properly called the principate, in which the empire was ruled by one person rather than the collective senate.Rome did not go from a republic to an empire.
