John Peter Zenger's trial established freedom of the press in America.
John Peter Zenger became a printer and publisher. His newspaper, the Weekly Journal, carried articles criticizing the royal governor, William Cosby. Angered by these attacks, Cosby ordered Zenger's arrest. At his trial in 1735, Zenger was defended by Andrew Hamilton of Philadelphia, one of the ablest lawyers of the time. He argued that a paper had the right to publish anything that was true. The jury ruled Zenger was not guilty, and he was freed. His case strengthened freedom of the press in the colonies.- These words are taken from a United States History publication by Paul M. Roberts and Paula A. Franklin.
In the United States of America, it created the law that for a statement to be slander, it must be false. It must be issued with malice aforethought. It made political correctness contrary to the law. It made the current slander laws of England contrary to those of The United States and unenforceable in The United States. Therefore, when someone from some third world country feels insulted because of what an American wrote about the mistreatment of women in his nation and wins a lawsuit for a million dollars in a British court, it will not be enforced in The United States.
The freedom that was won by John Peter Zenger was the freedom of establishing the press.

Zenger's case established the freedom of press in the United States. This was also pre-Constitution.The Zenger case helped establish the American commitment to freedom of the press.
John Peter Zenger lived in New York, where he operated a newspaper, along with his wife. His newspaper and the opinions it contained displeased the British government (back then, America was still a British colony) and the governor arrested him. He was charged him with seditious libel. He was ultimately acquitted, but the Zenger's case (which occurred in 1735), led the Founding Fathers to want to protect the right of freedom of speech and freedom of the press, which they did by creating the First Amendment to the Constitution later on.
