Why does an Alienware M15x battery show that it has charge and lights up on the indicator yet turn off if unplugged even though you have the battery set for on?
It is possible that the charger is plugged into the wall, but slips out of your computer. Also, you may need to replace your battery if that is not the case. After so long most rechargeable batteries start to lose their maximum lifespan.

You can configure a good laptop for around $1300.00 if that helps any.l Alien Ware is like the abercrombie and fitch of the computer world... save your money. No respected tech would ever own an Alien Ware machine your only saying that your willing to spend more money on something that looks good but will probably be outperformed by a well built Compaq which is saying alot. On the laptop end, Alienware is actually fairly priced when compared to other gaming laptops and Alienware tends to have the top-of-the-line offerings if you're willing to bust the bank.

Probably the most talked about one is the Macbook Pro. However, if you went for a windows, there is a graphics card from nvidia called the quadro FX which is available in several dells and the Alienware M15X and M17X, which seem to be the cheapest notebooks available with a graphics card of that caliber. It's also important to have a good external hard drive with at least a firewire connection for fast data transfer. You shouldn't work off your laptop hard drive because your laptop (no matter how fast) hard drive can't handle accessing the editing program and the footage at the same time. On the other hand if you're editing low quality footage, it will probably work fine.

The more layers you are working with and the larger the image is, the more memory your image editing program will consume. A good video card will also help out, however, it is the memory that is mainly important. A good quality monitor is also a plus. It depends on the specific model. Dell contracts several different manufacturers for their laptops and each has different habits of removable or not. - AFAIK most of the XPS series have graphics cards soldered to the motherboard, but there are a few different motherboard revisions, so you can upgrade the motherboard E. G. m1530 has geforce 8400m or 8600m versions. m1730 has removable card and can be upgraded to 9800m GT or GTX SLI but only a Dell m1730 card. M1710 is actually the same as a Dell m90 or something and uses a few removable cards. the studio XPS 1640 has motherboards with ATI 3670, 4670 and 5730. -Dell Alienware m15x, m17x and m18x use MXM 3.0 B graphics just like most Clevo/Sager and MSI gaming systems. You can find and change out high end cards like AMD 6990m and Nvidia 580m in all of these. - Dell Precision m6500 and m6600 also use MXM 3.0 B cards, come with professional Quadro and Firepro cards but can be changed for others. The m4600 uses smaller type MXM 3.0 A. Anything released earlier than these laptops cannot use different graphics cards or can only use cards made for the specific model.
Can you buy a crap laptop but install a graphic card to make it good?
Yes and I'll tell you exactly how to do it. Acer is the best brand to do it cheaply. You need to find a broken, budget machine. You can get one around 50$. If you do research by looking at pictures of motherboards, you can tell which are based on the same case and can use much better motherboards with standard MXM 2.1 type II graphics. The ODM model is useful to know, because it applies to the entire case and every model it is based off of, but on Ebay they aren't often listed like this. I did it with an Acer 5315. I bought a 5720g motherboard and it can run a 9600m GT ddr3. I had to cut holes in the case for some ports and buy the graphics heatsink. The ODM model here is ICL50, and there are in fact more which use the same case such as ICW50, the AMD version, ICL70 is the 17" case for the same motherboard layout. You really have to know what you're doing needless to say. Its in fact easier for high end models, and you have more options for cards and less work to do, but then you are investing a lot more money. the Alienware m15x can be found with i3 CPU, Nvidia gt 240m and upgraded to AMD 6990m. The first step however after being a very good technician is really knowing the market and what is worth it. Its certainly more interesting but much more difficult to mess with other rare brands and models like Acers. There are a few out there like the 8735g which use the same interface as the AMD 6970m etc and could potentially be upgraded a lot. Theres also a few gateways, like the nv73, nv74, nv78 series, but these are not necessarily upgradeable unless you know that they have a dedicated card already. Clevo/ Sager laptops are meant to be upgraded, but you'll still have to pay a lot for one. Do research on anything before buying. The best laptops around to upgrade are the MSI gx640, gt640 etc if you can find one for cheap. But you said crap laptop. Yes the only way is to find broken Acer machines, cheap motherboards etc. At this point you are basically going into the repairing trade and might as well learn board level repair.
