A gas engine produces its own vacuum, where a diesel engine has to have vacuum artificially produced. Your transmission problem doesn't sound like a vacuum problem. Have you checked the fluid level? When was the last time you changed the transmission fluid filter?
When water is heated to its boiling point, it is converted into water vapor or steam. This is a phase change from liquid to gas due to the input of energy in the form of heat.
Your car will run (poorly) during that tank of gas and it will smoke like crazy while the transmission fluid goes through the engine. Secondarily, the transmission fluid (being very high in detergents and cleaners) will clean your injectors and top end of your cylinders quite nicely. Not a recommended way to clean them, but if you get it in there accidentally that will be the silver lining.
If your vehicle shakes and smells like gas then you have problems other than low transmission fluid. Shaking and fuel smell indicates that all of the fuel is not being burned properly, and the engine is not operating as it should be.
