In his first term of presidency Jefferson bought the Louisiana Purchase from France, doubling the size of the US. Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on a quest to find the Pacific Ocean in 1804-1805. Jefferson also invented the moldboard plow, which was a great improvement on the already standard farming plow; the wheel cipher, and developed his own design on the concept of the spherical sundial. He was also the first man to say that tomatoes weren't poisonous.

Jefferson disliked the pomp and ritual that Washington and Adams brought to the executive office. He changed simple things like shaking hands instead of the regal bowing. He abolished regular formal receptions. Seats were not assigned, even at state dinners. He held small gatherings rather than large formal events. He pardoned those still in jail under the Sedition Act. He restored the five year residency requirement for citizenship that had been changed under Adams. He also cut the budget of the military and presented a plan to retire the national debt by 1817.
