They however, already inhabited such peninsula since many centuries before (apparently, since 2600 BC) and continued inhabiting such region as a separate civilization until their last city was conquered by Spanish conquistadors in 1697 AD. Even today, they remain as separate ethnic group within the countries covered by the Mayan people -- Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador.
