In Christmas week 1864, when they reached Savannah and found that the Confederate army under Hardee had escaped into South Carolina.
Having re-established telegraph links (after five weeks of worrying silence), Sherman sent Lincoln a joke-despatch, offering him the city of Savannah as a Christmas present.
Sherman's troops began their march through Georgia in Atlanta.
It Began October 15, 1864, not long after Sherman took Atlanta. He marched through Georgia, all the way to Savannah, leaving a "scar" across the state approximately 350 Miles wide. After taking Savannah and presenting it to Lincoln as a Christmas gift, Sherman worked his way North, battling General Joseph Eggleston Johnston until his surrender at Bentonville.
In the Civil War, after the Union Army captured the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee, it became impossible for the factories of Alabama to use the Tennessee River to ship suppliesto the Confederate armies in Virginia. The Confederates had to send them through Georgia. General Sherman moved his army from Chattanooga south toward Atlanta. Finally, General Sherman conquered Atlanta. After a few skirmishes the Confederate Army headed to Tennessee. General Sherman then spread out his army to a 60 mile wide front. They burned every house, every barn, every bridge, and when they came to rail road tracks, they burned the rail road ties. Then they put the middle of the rails over the fire and made them red hot. Then they took the rails and bent them around trees. They killed and cooked all the farm animals. Then they burned any crops that were left. They created a 60 mile wide area where no food would be available for horses pulling wagons loaded with guns and ammunition. Until that point, civilians had not been affected by the war. It also announced to civilians, "If you do not supporting the war effort, we are bringing it to you." It was designed to cut off Lee's supply of ammunition and to discourage Confederate supporters of the war effort.
Entered Savannah just before Christmas - Sherman presented the city to Lincoln as a gift in a joke-telegram.
Sherman marched through Georgia burning every town he came across, basically destroying anything the south could use. He cut off his men from supplies and communication during this march and acted on his own whim. He became famous for "sherman neckties" which were created when he ordered his men to destroy the Confederate railroad system. His men pulled the rails up from the ground and bent them around the nearby trees in the form of neckties, hence the nickname.

shermans march to the sea was to stop souther infastructure with that ruined the north would be able to defeat the south because he would take any supply line to the south.
