He was appointed Chancellor at the end of January 1933 by President Hindenburg as part of a deal to try to get a coalition government created- Germany's system works sort of like Britain's, in that the party (or coalition of parties) that holds the most seats in the parliament (or Reichstag, in Germany) gets to choose the Chancellor, who runs the government. The Nazi Party and two other right-wing parties had agreed to form a coalition to get him appointed. Part of the deal was that there would be elections held in the first week of March.

About a week before the elections were held, the Reichstag was set on fire. A Dutch man who was also a Communist was arrested at the scene, but it is commonly believed that he was a scapegoat, and that the Nazis may have actually set the fire. President Hindenburg issued an executive order that allowed Chancellor Hitler to arrest Communists, which Hitler did- and he also used this power to arrest other leftists, including socialists, social democrats, and so on, and tried to prevent people from voting for them.

When the election was finally held, Hitler's party won the most seats (almost 50%), but had to ally with the German National People's Party to have more than 50%. Additionally, they were able to convince the Catholic Centre Party to also join the coalition, which gave the Nazi-GNPP-Centre coalition a supermajority- they had more than 66% of the seats, which would allow them to pass any kind of law they wished, including amendments to the German Constitution.

Hitler wasted very little time solidifying his position. Less than three weeks after the election, his coalition passed the "Enabling Act". This law took almost all of the government's power and gave it to Hitler himself. He didn't need to pass laws through the Reichstag anymore, he could just make them up. This law basically ended the Weimar Republic and ushered in Hitler's "Third Reich".

Shortly after passing the Enabling Act, Hitler began a process called "Gleichschaultung" ("synchronization"). This replaced government and civilian agencies with new agencies that were totally loyal to the Nazi Party and conformed to Nazi ideology. He passed laws that restricted Jews in many ways, such as stripping them of their citizenship, disallowing them from marrying Germans, and forcing them to close their businesses. He also banned other political parties- even the ones that had just helped him come to power- and forced them to join the Nazi Party.

In June of 1934, Hitler had the "Night of the Long Knives". The Nazi Party had its own small army called the Sturmabteiling ("assault section"), or SA, and sometimes nicknamed "Brownshirts" due to their uniforms. The leader of the SA, a man named Ernst Röhm, had become powerful and Hitler feared Röhm might try to use the SA to overthrow the government. Additionally, there was a leftist faction within the Nazi Party that was led by two brothers named Gregor and Otto Strasser. The "Strasserites" believed in Socialism and wanted the Nazi Party to become socialist too- but Hitler and his closest allies did not.

On the Night of the Long Knives, Hitler ordered all of them to be killed. Röhm, the Strasserites (one of the brothers escaped before the Night), and anyone else who Hitler thought might betray him at some point. The SA was disbanded and folded into the Schutzstaffel ("protection staff"), or SS, which was Hitler's personal bodyguard.

President Hindenburg was the only thing that prevented Hitler from having absolute power. The President was mostly a ceremonial rank, but did have special emergency powers that could be used to force laws to happen. Additionally, Hindenburg was a successful general during World War I, so he was considered a major war hero- if Hitler had tried to take full control and a civil war started, Hindenburg would have been guaranteed to have the support of the military. But Hindenburg was a very old man, and didn't really want to get involved too much in politics. Plus he was a conservative Prussian military man, so Hitler's politics generally didn't bother him too much. However, in August 1934, Hindenburg finally passed away. Hitler did not have elections to replace him; instead, Hitler basically merged the Presidency and the Chancellorship. This new position was called "Führer" ("leader"), and Hitler was the only person to hold it.

At this point, Hitler was absolute ruler of Germany with nothing holding him back. He began the chain of events that would ultimately lead to World War II and catastrophic levels of death and destruction.

the people were losing faith in the government, eg like the depression was going on and they viewed it as being the governments fault because they werent helping ,

communists were also in a weird time because half the people wanted to turn to communism ( because they needed money because of the depression ) and the other half didnt want to share their wealth.

democracy was being threatened , because so many problems had happened under democracy , eg hyperinflation , the people didnt think it could work. of course in reality hyperinflation didnt happen because of democracy , people were just looking for someone to blame.

so hindeburg, and von papen , brought Hitler along because he already had supporters , for the nazi parties and they hoped they could control him , which evidentially didnt happen !
