∙ 15y agoRecovery of as many sailors as possible, clean up of the harbor, and medical attention for the survivors were the immediate needs after the attack. There were attempts to rescue those who were trapped in the hulls of the overturned ships. Approximately 35 were rescued from the Oklahoma but they had to be careful. If they used a torch to burn through the hull - they used the oxygen up that those trapped were breathing. If they used the drill and it took too long to open up the water level rose in the ship as the air pocket was released and those inside drowned.
