The Goths continued to pillage the Balkans until Flavius Theodosius beat them back in 382 and established peace with them, allowing them to remain inside the empire's boundaries.
The year after the battle the Visigoths split into two groups. One of them went to Pannonia (present day eastern Austria and western Hungary) and the other went to the present day Macedonian Republic. The former were defeated by the emperor Gratian. The latter sacked the towns in the area. Gratian appointed Theodosius I as his co-emperor and put in in charge of the eastern part of the empire and of dealing with the Visigoths in that area. He was able to push them back to Thrace, their original area of settlement. He then agreed a peace treaty. The Visigoths were accepted as Roman allies again and were still allowed to settle in the Danube area of the empire. They fought alongside the Roman army as an allied force. Some Visigoths served in the Roman legions.
