The Union placed a blockade on Southern exports, split the South in half by controlling the Mississippi River and New Orleans and then fought a war of attrition that led to the eventual surrender of all Southern forces.

The US Civil War Battle of Gettysburg developed as Confederate General Robert E. Lee was on his way to raid the capital of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg late in June of 1863. Union forces, the Army of the Potomac, were led by newly appointed Major General George Meade. The two armies met, quite by accident, near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The three days of battle were from July 1, to July 3rd. It was a pitched three day conflict with the Union forces forcing the Confederates to retreat. This was a major Union victory that prevented the Rebel seizure of Harrisburg, which would have dealt the Union a severe blow.
