  • Charles I of England granted a charter for the colony of Maryland to Lord Baltimore.
  • King Władysław IV Vasa of Poland banned antisemitic literature.
  • Various events of the Thirty Years' War took place, including the following:
    • King Gustav Adolf of Sweden invaded Bavaria with his army in March.
    • Munich, the capital of Bavaria, was captured by the Swedish army in May.
    • Gustav Adolph, who had become besieged by Wallenstein at Nuremberg, attempted to break the siege, but was defeated in the Battle of the Alte Veste on September 9.
    • November 16 The Battle of Lützen was on November 16. Gustav Adolf was killed in the battle, but the Swedish Army was victorious, and Wallenstein withdrew from Saxony.
