The election of Abraham Lincoln as the new president, was to many Southerners a disaster. Their recourse was to declare a secession from the US and form a new nation called the Confederate States of America. Southerners believed that with Lincoln as president, he would do all he could to end slavery. This was their belief despite Lincoln's moderate view that he would not interfere with slavery where it already existed.

The US Civil War of course continued after the March 4, 1865 second inaugural address of US President Abraham Lincoln. Union General Philip Sheridan and two divisions of his Army of the Shenandoah had joined General Grant at Petersburg in late March. Union forces now numbered 125,000 troops there. Robert E. Lee's army had been reduced to 30,000 men. If US Grant simply waited, the war would dissolve of its own volition. But no chances on that could be taken. Grant decided to use the troops he had to end the Siege of Petersburg and take Richmond.

Indeed this would happen and forced Lee westward towards Lynchburg. The end of the war truly was in sight.

In Richmond, Confederate President Jefferson Davis was at church when a messenger gave him a note advising him that Lee had evacuated Petersburg and Richmond was in dire danger. Davis and the Confederate government abandoned Richmond that night.

Technically the war would not end with Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. But it was over. The last Confederate flag would be lowered on a Confederate ship docked at an English port late in 1865.
