In the New Testament, on the day of the pentecost the Holy Spirit came down upon the praying disciples of Jesus Christ. It came in the form of tongues of fire. The event is recorded in Acts of the Apostles. In the Old Testament, Hebrews commemorated this day as the day when God gave his commandments to Moses on the Mount Sinai.

The New Testament is a large book and it would take days to describe what happened in the book. My suggestion to you is to buy one and read it.

I will tell you that the book is about Jesus Christ being the Savior of the world and how important it is for everyone to realize who He is and how to become a follower of Him. Your life here and now and your after life in eternity depends on your decision.

Additional thoughts:

Much of the 'New Testament'(Christian Greek Scriptures) fulfill hundreds of prophecies from the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament), and are made up of

-Four 'gospels'(Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) which basically tell the life story and achievements of Jesus Christ from four different perspectives, each filling in little details not mentioned in the other.

-Book of Acts which tells the story of what happened to Jesus' followers after he returned to Heaven, and the beginning of the God ordained 'preaching work' in the early Christian Church

-21 letters that follow(Romans, 1+2Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1+2Thessolonians, 1+2Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1+2Peter, 1,2,3John, and Jude) are all communication sent from those taking the lead in the Christian Congregation, to various congregations or to specific people. These letters are filled with encouragement and correction designed to keep ALL the congregations united in belief and purpose, as they dealt with the 'inner workings' of this new organization in the beginning, especially the world wide preaching work assigned by Jesus(Matthew 28:19+20/Acts 1:8), including our day today. These letters were to be passed between the congregations so that they would all have the same information(Colossians 4:16/1 Corinthians 1:10), and we today have them all in one place. The Bible.

-Revelation (the final book) previewed future events involving the world and the Christian congregation as it fits into God's purpose .

An overview perspective of the New Testament:

The New Testament records the "beginnings of God's FULFILLMENT of His ancient promises [prophecies]" to the Old Testament Faithful... and to "all the families of the earth" [all the nations on earth].

"...I mean that Christ has become a servant to Israel to PROVE GOD'S TRUTHFULNESS, to MAKE VALID HIS PROMISES TO OUR FOREFATHERS, and for THE HEATHEN PEOPLES [Gentiles] TO PRAISE GOD FOR HIS MERCY, as the Scripture says: 'For this I will give thanks to you among the heathen [Gentile nations], and will sing praises to your name.'" (Rom.15:8-9 WNT William's New Testament)

What happened in the New Testament was that Jesus Christ... the Creator LORD God of the Old Testament [see John 1:3], who entered into covenant relationship with Faithful Abraham, and who promised to make of him a Great Nation [the gospel of the Kingdom of God]... and through whose Faith ALL THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD WOULD BE BLESSED[the promise of the Christ and Salvation of the world] -- began to fulfill those promises.

It began with Jesus' BECOMING GOD'S PERFECT PASSOVER SACRIFICE, thus opening the door for "all the families [nations] on earth" to receive God's Mercy.

But, even more so: what happened [began] in the New Testament IS STILL GOING ON to this day, and will continue until Christ returns to establish God's Kingdom on earth!

And remove all sin from the world.

"...IN HIS NAME repentance as the condition for the forgiveness of sins should be preached TO ALL THE NATIONS. Beginning at Jerusalem you are to CONTINUE as witnesses to these things." (Luke 24:47-48 WNT)

The New Testament reveals the beginning of God's fulfillment of His Promises [through Jesus Christ] of the establishment of His Kingdom on earth and the Salvation of mankind... and gives testimony to Christ's coming future fulfillment of each and every phase of His plan in its proper time... concluding with Judgment Day, the Last Great Day.

"After that comes the end, when He will turn the Kingdom over to God His Father, when He will put an end to all other government, authority, and power; for He must continue to be King until He puts all His enemies under His feet. Death is the Last Enemy to be stopped... And when everything has been put in subjection to Him, then the Son Himself will also become subject to Him who has put everything in subjection to Him, so that God may be everything to everybody." (I Cor.15:24-28 WNT)

The New Testament is STILL HAPPENING. God's Promises are not yet all fulfilled. The final phases of God's plan are still ahead of us. The Father is still calling His Elect and "giving them to His Son," to train for their "mansions" [chambers, offices, jobs, positions of rulership and authority] in His Kingdom, to rule the nations of the earth with Him for a thousand years [see Rev.20:4-6].

"My prayer is not for the world, but FOR THOSE YOU HAVE GIVEN ME, because they belong to you. And all of them, since THEY ARE MINE, belong to you; and you have given them back to Me, so they are My Glory." (John 17:9-10 NLT New Living Translation)

Jesus Christ still has to come back to fulfill the rest of the prophecies He started to in the New Testament account -- the Living WORD of God. The New Testament is STILL ALIVE and STILL HAPPENING.

"...'Yes, I AM coming soon!' Amen! Come, LORD Jesus!'" (Rev.22:20 WNT)

If your referring to the first Pentecost in 31 AD, then the story is in Acts 2. Basically, God's Holy Spirit is once again freely released into the world and falls first upon the Apostles and othe disciples - flaming tongues. They begin to speak and other hear them in their native tongue. Peter convicts the crowd of approximately 3,000 who become the first newly baptized followers of Christ.

What is the difference between the Jewish Pentecost and the Maltese pentecost?

A:The Jewish Pentecost or Shavuot, celebrated from the second century BCE onwards in memory of the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai, takes place fifty days after Passover. Numbers 11:25 says that on the day of the Jewish Pentecost, the spirit of God came down on the seventy elders and they began to prophesy in ecstasy. The 'Maltese' Pentecost is the Christian Pentecost and takes place fifty days after Easter, which originally coincided with the Passover. Acts of the Apostles says that on the day of Pentecost, everyone that was in the upper room, was filled with the Holy Spirit coming down on them as tongues of fire and the began to speak in tongues as the spirit gave them the utterance. There are parallels to the earlier account in the story of the Christian Pentecost, which was probably inspired by the Jewish Pentecost.
