One soldier who returned home to his family found that he was being laughed at whenever he greeted people with a Hitler salute. Being regularly forced into shelters to hide from air-raids was an ordeal for Berliners, food was getting scarcer and fears of invasion and defeat were growing, despite Propaganda attempts to keep up a bit of spirit. A combination of air-raids and the Battle of Berlin at the end of the war left the city with more rubble than any other place in Germany, although others cities such as Dresden and Hamburg suffered worse.
