The country was occupied by the four allied powers. viz. USA, Great Britain, France and USSR (Russia).

The German -polish border was moved west to the River Oder.

Prussia, Pomerania, were absorbed into Poland.

The USSR occupied north East Germany and created the DDR ( Deutscher Demokratische Republik(East Germany). The USA occupied southern Germany, The British occupied northern Germany, and the French occupied the Saarland and Alsace. With the exception of the DDR the western occupying powers kept the nation in one piece. The Capital city became Bonn on the River Rhine.

Berlin was wholly encircled by East Germany (DDR), but the four occupying powers each had a section of the city. Special access roads, and rail were made from West Germany to Berlin for the occupying western Powers(Allies). Peolple travlling on these roads could NOT divrty from them, under threat of imprisonment by the communist east German authorities , with the support of the USSR.

The city was cleared of war debris, and West Berlin became a cosmopolitan city on the western model. However, East Berlin was not seriopusly rebuilt, and just remained a cleared wreck.

The infamous Berlin Wall was NOT built until 1961, by the East Germans/USSR. It it was brought down in 1989. A section remains to today as a monumnet to history.

Access for German people between East and West Germany and between East & West Berlin was severely restricted until the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the subsequent reunification of Germany. (East & West becoming one nation again).
