Officially, Italy became an Allied country, and some some Italian military personnel fought against the Germans, while some remained on the side of the Germans and the deposed Mussolini government in Milan. Effectively, however, Italy was knocked out of the war in 1943, and was not a great help to the Allies of the Axis. Most Italians had enough of it by that point, and they only wanted to go home and rebuild.
