Harrison was elected President of the United States on March 4 and died on April 4, 1841.

John Tyler, who was Vice-President, participated to the funeral on April 7th, then he took the oath of office as President and issued an inaugural address. By this way he avoided of succeeding to Harrison only as acting in the dead president's place, but as the President. His initiative was backed by the cabinet and endorsed by the Congress in the special, session which took place on May 31, 1841.
