He was taken into custody by forces of the Provisional Government, with the intent that he would be exiled to Great Britain. Later, after the October Revolution, forces of the Bolshevik Party seized him and moved him and his family to the Ipatiev House at Ekaterinburg. In July 1918, he and everyone in the Royal Family were murdered in the Russian Civil War, to stop them returning to power.

Nicholas II abdicated in 1917 because of the growing Bolshevik revolution. He was attempting to shift power and maintain the Tsar's power at least to some extent while allowing for a democratic element to enter Russia. The man he wanted to abdicate to refused to take the job, and the Bolsheviks eventually took control and arrested the Romanovs.

Tsar Nicholas II was the last crowned Emperor of Russia. During 1917, during the Russian civil war, he lost the support of the army and was forced to abdicate. He and his family were held in different locations, then finally imprisoned at a house in Yekatarinburg. On 17 July 1918, he and his entire family, as well as some of their servants, were taken to the cellar, where they were executed by a detachment of Bolsheviks led by Yakov Yurovsky. At first, the bodies were disposed of down a mine-shaft. Later, Yurovsky removed the bodies and buried most of them in a sealed and concealed pit, where they remained until geologists located them in the 1970s. The remains were exhumed and formally identified in the 1990s.
