Graves Registration buried the bodies in temporary cemeteries throughout the war zones. After the war was over, some were disinterred and returned home, while others rest in permanent cemetaries throughout the war zones. You might like to take a look at the American Battle Monuments web site. After the war, the families were asked if they wanted the bodies of their loved ones returned to the US or not.
