Sparta, known as Lakedaimon in ancient texts/not because of the modern term laconic but because of the province of Laconia it is situated in, was an ancient Greek city-state or polis. Lakedaimon also includes villages somewhat outside Sparta like Amykleia that were not a part of the 5 small villages that were the ''city'' of Sparta itself.

Sparta was the military culture which took the military supremacy in Greece and beyond,in about 650BC. It's power was in it's peak around 550-480, including Persian invasion of Greece. Followed by slow decline started immediately after Persian invasion and the great earthquake which struck the polis in mid 460's BC, throughout Peloponnesian wars, which Sparta managed to win, but at a great cost. The final blow to to Sparta by Thebes was in a battle in 371BC. If it can be narrowed to one date Sparta was disestablished in 195 BC.

Sparta was a city state in Greece. It was formed after the Dorians invaded Greece and the Spartans were enemies of the Ahenians.

Sparta (Doric Greek: Σπάρτα, Spártā; Attic Greek: Σπάρτη, Spártē) was a prominent city-state in ancient Greece. In antiquity the city-state was known as Lacedaemon(Λακεδαίμων, Lakedaímōn), while the name Sparta referred to its main settlement on the banks of the Eurotas River in Laconia, in south-eastern Peloponnese. Around 650 BC, it rose to become the dominant military land-power in ancient Greece.
