The Sons of Liberty was a group of colonists that used some violence in order to frighten the tax collectors. This was a rebellious act used by the colonists, trying to pressure the British Parliament in order to repeal the Stamp Act.

Neither. They were businessmen who were the colonies smugglers and didn't want the British to undermine their business. After the Boston Tea Party they became more politically active against the British rule that they saw as oppressive. If you have to classify them I would put them in the patriot side.
