It was Harold hardrada claiming that he was the rightful king due to an agreement between his father hardicanute and the Danish ruler of England

The agreement

Hardicanute had promised the throne to Kind Magnus of Norway and as magnus was too old to battle edward the confessor magnus's son Harold Hardrada was his heir and therefore said he was the next in line for the throne.

They gathered a army of 300 ships estimated to have 15,000 men each on them and invaded England. They batted King Harold (II) Godwinson at Stamford bridge and lost (miserably) as they where at a terrible disadvantage (no armour, flimsy weapons, seperated)

The last King of England from the House of Wessex was Edward the Confessor. King Edward had no heir, and to please his neighbours he promised pretty much all of them the Throne of England.

*William "the Bastard", Duke of Normandy.

*Harald "Hårdråde" Sigurdsson, King of Norway-

*Sveinn II Estridsson, King of Denmark.

When Edward died all of these men wanted to be given the Crown. The English nobility, the Saxon lords, didn't want to have a foreign King and therefore they crowned Harold Godwinson as the new King of England.

King Sveinn backed of, but Harald and William prepared to launch invasions of the island, to take the land by force.

The King of Norway arrived first, near the city of York. During the battle of Stamford Bridge, Harald vs Harold, Harald was killed. Only one enemy left for the English to defeat.

But, when the forces clashed in the south, at Hastings, King Harold was killed by an arrow which hit him in the eye. Tired from fighting the Vikings, the English were defeated and the Duke of Normandy won.

William was crowned King of England and was no longer to be known as "the bastard", but instead "the Conqueror".

The defeat of the Norwegian army at Stamford Bridge was the last time a Norse lord would lead a large force into English lands, marking the end of the Viking age.

SO, No land was conquered by the Vikings in 1066.
