"The dark ages" is a name invented and condescendingly used by people in the Renaissance era that started in the late 14th century. The reason for looking down their noses at the period between 400 AD and the 14th century was mainly that in that era the knowledge and study of classical art and science had been 'neglected'.

In reality, the period was not 'dark' at all. Universities had been founded, Medieval scientists and thinkers had been active in many fields, many abbeys and several royal courts were centers of learning and schools with a wide range of subjects were available for those who could afford it. The Renaissance only widened the range of subjects for study.
