If the President takes no action after 10 days, the legislation is automatically vetoed and is returned for a re-vote in the House and Senate. This is referred to as a "pocket veto", because the President can just let the bill die without having to give a reason for the action or officially opposing the bill.
It is called a pocket veto.
the bill is automatically vetoed. aka pocket veto :)
The bill automatically dies. For a president to allow that to happen is known as a pocket veto.
within 10 days of receiving it, not counting Sundays
The President is supposed to recommend to Congress what new legislation he/she believes is needed, and after the House and Senate pass a bill, it is up to the President to either sign (accept) it or veto (reject) it. However, Congress is not obligated to follow the President's recommendations, and if the President fails to sign or veto a bill within ten days of receiving it (excluding Sundays), it automatically becomes a law if Congress is still in session at that time, and it automatically dies if Congress has adjourned by then. Congress can also override a President's veto with the support of two thirds of both Houses.
If the Congress is still in session, the bill becomes a law after 10 days even if the President has not signed it or vetoed it. If the President vetoed the bill, Congress has to override the veto in order for it to become a law. If the President has not signed the bill within 10 days and the Congress is not in session, it does not become a law. This is called a "pocket veto."
A Bill becomes law if it is not returned within 10 days(sundays excepted)
the president does not sign a bill within ten days of receiving it, and congress is still in session.
The president does not sign a bill within 10 days of receiving it, and congress is still in session
The president does not sign a bill within 10 days of receiving it, and congress is still in session.
If Congress has not adjourned, the bill becomes law anyway. If Congress does adjourn during the ten-day period, the President may elect not to sign, creating the special case of veto called a "pocket veto". (This type of veto has been challenged, sometimes successfully, and the bill can become law.)
the bill terminate from becoming a law
