The mass air flow sensor allows the computer to determine how much air is available for combustion in the engine. If the mass air flow sensor fails, the computer must make some kind of estimate of how much air is available, but a wrong estimate will result in poor fuel economy, poor engine performance, a lean burn condition which can burn valves and/or pistons or any combination of the above.

A mass air flow sensor failure should be resolved as soon as possible.
