When the sensor goes out, the engine starts to shake violently, after running tit fo a few minutes. And you will also expend more in gas!!, the motor will run,, but uses more gas due bad timing signal... Jesus S. --------------------
Nothing really happens unless you are using VERY low grade gasoline. First, if its bad get it replaced by a service tech. Its hard to replace for a novice and you waste money because your fuel mileage goes down. Running my vehicle with a bad knock sensor, I've gone from 32 MPG to 25 MPG. I could have paid for a new sensor several times over by now.
Its possible that the engine could "shake violently" but use a higher octane gasoline to prevent predetonation until you get it fixed.
The knock sensor advances the timing to optimize fuel efficiency. When it goes out, your gas mileage goes down.
The knock sensor retards the engine timing when there is a knock or ping detected. This will make the car a little sluggish. It is rare that the knock sensor goes bad.
The sensor is bad. A properly-functioning knock sensor allows the ECM to advance timing until it senses a knock. It then retards timing until the knock just barely goes away allowing for optimal gas mileage.
Nothing will happen to the car if you disconnect the knock sensor. It just will not detect a problem if there happens to be one.
what happens if the transaxle range sensor goes bad?
LS does not have a knock sensor. GSR does have a knock sensor
The knock sensors yes there are two are located on either side of the motor (4.3LTR Vortec) below the heads in the center area of the engine block. There are a place for another sensor just above where the knock sensor goes but these are for other sensors. The knock sensor is located just below the intake manifold youll have to get under the car to see it, it goes right into the back of the block.
Not much goes wrong with them! if your car is pinging under load this may be a bad knock sensor, but if you tap the block with a small hammer & the idol seems to change or the timing wanders this is the knock sensor failing. if the idol doesn't change this is a bigger issue
The knock sensor detects spark knock or ping.
We need to know what engine you have to answer that.
A knock sensor detects engine knock in the motor(aka pinging, detonation, or uncontrolled explosions. it basically means the motor is about to blow up or potentially could.) the second part to a knock sensor is that it keeps the ignition timing as advanced as possible to make the most power without making engine knock. So if you have a bad knock sensor or have a check engine light form a knock sensor your car will be slower. this is when your car goes into LIMP mode which is basically a preset running condition which is safe for the motor.
