This depends on the type of motor. Many motors today have interference heads. This means the valves open down into the path of travel of the piston; timed in such a way they don't strike each other. If your belt breaks on a motor like this the piston will travel up and hit the valve and could cause serious damage to the valve, the head and/or the camshaft. This could mean buying a head for your motor. There are pictures of Porsche motors that blew the valve right through the valve cover when the timing belt broke. Preventitive maintenance is the best cure. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule and replace the belt as they recommend.

Generally if the timing belt breaks, it will not do damage apart from the cam, etc. being out of time. However, if the belt streches thru wear and slips on timing, this can do serious damage, such as beding rods and valves. Sometimes in this case if you are really lucky you can have a rod go through a piston, then you need a major rebuild.

your engine will not run if the timing belt is broken and if it is an interference engine, the valves would hit the pistons and completely ruin the engine; if the belt has skipped a tooth or two, it will run badly

when the engine is cranking, the crank will turn but the valves will not work. if timing belt has failed cranking can bend valve stems so be very careful what you are doing

How do you know if broken timing belt did more damage on 99 ZX2?

99 zx2 has a non interference engine. This means if the timing is off or the timing belt breaks, no damage will occur to your engine. If you replaced the belt and your engine runs rough, misfires, bucks, that means you didn't put the timing belt on right. It's got to be put on perfectly with the crankshaft at TDC and the cams aligned. Have fun. If you can figure it out, you can take it to a Ford dealer to have the timing belt put on properly.

What is the problem if the timing belt isn't moving?

if the timing belt is not moving when engine is cranking,it means you have broken a cam,or a belt pulley.do not keep cranking as you can damage other parts of the engine such as the valves

Can the valves on a 1995 Ford Ranger bend if the timing belt breaks?

Yes, the valves can bend, or even damage or crack the piston. Reason is: when the cam stops rotating due to the broken timing belt the valves no longer go up and down but remain in one position (either up or down), but the crankshaft-driven pistons keep moving up and down, making hard contact with the valves, and thus the damage.

If you have a 1993 ford escort lx wagon and timing belt broke while driving would there be any damage to motor?

It's possible. There are only 2 ways to find out: 1. disassemble the engine and inspect for damage. 2. Put a new timing belt on and see if you have good compression across all cylinders. If you do, you probably didn't cause damage when the timing belt broke. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Put on the timing belt. The car will run fine or really poorly. It will be obvious if you have any bent or stuck valves. Y-THINK-Y

If the timing belt on a 1.6 astra snaps does it damage the engine?

If the timing belt on a 1.6 Astra breaks, it can damage the engine. It is more likely to damage the engine if it is a timing chain, though. A timing chain is made of metal and a timing belt is made of a heavy duty rubber.
