With a tear in my heart, I must pen my opinion and offer "nothing" as the common answer.

However in small enclaves throughout the United States you will still today find men who follow the ancient code of chivelry. One such group which comes immediately to mind are the US Army Soldiers, whose sentinels "stand the vigil" and guard the tomb of the unknown.

Chivelry is not only to be instilled into the hearts of men. A man can provide honors to a woman in many ways. However to do so sucessfully, whether in public or private, intentionally, with forthought and common sense requires the attention and cooperation of the women being honored. I refer with great adoration to the Arlington Ladies.

Today, gender identification and personal social preferences have confused the original concept of chivelry and thus changed the appearance of the Paladin forever. It is true that boys and girls are still being taught these old ways, but alas it is no longer in the home. I find it sad that the ones who once had the greatest interest in developing a boy into a man and were once charged by society to give him the required practice in this art have turned a blind eye. Who else is better qualified to teach a boy how to relate and interact with women than his own mothers, aunts and sisters? The same is true about his interaction with men than his fathers, uncles and brothers?

You may have noticed that I have referenced a particular group of men and women which you may have never heard of. Imagine how they learned to deal with these specific social issues. Why? Because they understand what honor is and know where valor sleeps. I think you, as a citizen, should know too.

What does chivalry mean during the middle ages?

Originally, chivalry was knighthood. It was the business of being a heavily armored cavalryman. There was a lot entailed in this in the Middle Ages, as a knight had to have an income and land to support his purchase of armor, raising horses, and keeping a support staff. This, in turn, meant having lands to support the process, with peasants, and all the infrastructure involved. In time a Code of Chivalry was developed, which governed the actions of the knights, at least in theory. The Code of Chivalry required the knight to be merciful to enemies, be protective of the poor and anyone without defense, including all women, be loyal, be careful to protect the Church, and so on.

What people did the knights have to protect?

Good question. Chivalry comes from the french word for horse riding. It is also where we get the word cavalier. So Chivalry used to mean some one who was good at horse riding/combat. So Chivalry does not really exist as some written code like say Bushido did. If I had to define what it chivalry was. It was more or less what you lord told you it was or what people found "desirable" in a knight. Think "oh this knight is real brave courageous and loyal to his lord he is Chivalrous". See the video the TRUTH about chivalry byShadiversityon YouTube.

Is the age of chivalry the same thing as the middle ages?

No. The Middle Ages lasted from about 450 to 1450, an Age of Chivalry, regardless of how we mean the term, would have been only a small part of this. The Age of Chivalry is not really defined by historians. If we take it as the time when knights dominated warfare, it might be from about 1100 to 1350. If we take it as the time when the Code of Chivalry was of overriding importance in literature, it might have been from about 1200 to 1400.
